Ammonia Test
Testing for ammonia in a reef aquarium is crucial, especially in new tanks, as ammonia is highly toxic to fish, corals, and invertebrates. Ammonia is produced by decomposing organic matter and fish waste, and it should be processed by beneficial bacteria through the nitrogen cycle. To test, use an ammonia test kit, which usually involves mixing the tank water with a reagent and observing a color change to indicate the concentration of ammonia. Ideally, ammonia levels should be undetectable (0 ppm) in a mature, cycled aquarium. Regular testing helps identify potential issues early, preventing harm to tank inhabitants.
