Nitrite Test
Testing nitrite in a reef aquarium is crucial, particularly during the initial setup and cycling process, as nitrite is highly toxic to fish and invertebrates. Nitrite is an intermediate product of the nitrogen cycle, created as beneficial bacteria break down ammonia. In a fully cycled and mature aquarium, nitrite levels should be undetectable (0 ppm). To test for nitrite, use a test kit that involves adding reagents to a water sample until a color change indicates the concentration. Regular testing, especially in new tanks, helps ensure that the nitrogen cycle is functioning properly, creating a safe environment for reef inhabitants.
